Devious Maids

This is a spin off show to Desperate housewives, but focuses on the maids of rich housewives in Beverly Hills, California. What is so compelling about this show is that, despite some story lines being a bit predictable, is the characters. The casting for this show is excellent, and all the actors in this show are fantastic. There are the Powell’s – Evelyn and Adrian who are completely evil, yet lovable villains; these two characters are hilarious to watch, and have a lot of chemistry. In the second season particularly, these two characters are incredible to watch. Another favorite character of mine is Rosie; she is a maid who begins to have an affair with her employer, but what most people will love about her character is her comedic value. She provides a lot of entertainment in the show, and is a great asset to the show. I would recommend this show to anyone who liked desperate housewives, and to anyone who is looking for a bit of comedy with light drama.

Young and Hungry

This is a new show, that has just premiered this summer. To be honest when I first heard of this show, I wasn’t exactly excited; it seemed like an ok show that I wouldn’t  mind missing. But, later I decided to watch the plot, and it was exactly what I expected. The laughter track in the back ground is annoying, and the jokes are forced and simple. The acting in the show is fine, except for the Elliot whom lives up to the stereotypes expected of him – which is sad because his character could be made much better. Instead, he is an very absurd character who I do not care much for; however, the one character in the show that does provide comedic relief – and is probably the only one to save the show – is Yolanda. Although much like Elliot she lives up to her stereotypes, I find her character likable and also some what funny. Despite being a comedy show, I struggled to laugh more than a few times, and think that I may give this show a miss. Whether or not you like this show I would love to know, but I think the food based puns and predictability may be too much for me.

Doctor who

Trailer for new season – Can’t wait!

Doctor who is a show that I first began to watch when David Tennant became the doctor. When he left I was skeptical of Matt Smith, however I must say that his acting was brilliant. Although some of his story lines may have not been great – the silence arc was definitely over played and boring – his acting in certain scenes were fantastic. The final scene in the name of the Doctor between him and River song has to be one of my favorites! Despite finding Clara an annoying companion, I am looking forward to what the new season brings. When I first heard that Peter Capaldi was the new doctor, I wasn’t sure what to expect; but I hope that with this new doctor we may experience more mature plots. Matt Smith’s doctor illustrated to the audience a different side of the doctor, to what Tennant delivered. Thus, I am interested to see what Capaldi’s doctor will bring in season 8…

For those who have not seen the show, I would recommend it – especially if your into sci-fi. I would give this show 7 out of 10 stars!

The Fosters

This is another ABC family show, and is about an interracial lesbian couple whom live with their 4 adopted children plus another child from a previous relationship. What is interesting about this show, compared to other ABC family shows, is that although there are moments where it is predictable the characters themselves are very unique. Callie is the protagonist, and she has moved from foster home to foster home, never belonging anywhere; that is until she meets Stef and Lena Foster. She is an empathetic character, and one that has grown on me from the pilot episode. In the pilot, she is very closed off, and a bit annoying, but as the season unfolds the story of Callie is told and she becomes a more likable character. I think at the heart of the show, we see the failure of the foster system and how it affects the lives of these children. It is upsetting at times, because the show has its moments of complete truth that do startle the audience; it is shocking the things some kids will put up with. The main message in the show is to accept diversity, the younger brother of Callie named Jude, is a prime example of a child confused with his sexual orientation. His adoptive father would beat him due to him dressing up in women’s clothing in the pilot; his character is very innocent and sweet, and he is definitely a large reason for why many watch the show!

Impractical Jokers

For any comedy buffs out there, this is a must see show. It follows 4 friends, who have to do exactly what the others tell them to, and if they fail to do so they lose. The person who loses the most tasks will be punished; and trust me the punishments are hilarious! What is particularly amusing about this show, is the chemistry between the 4 friends; the fact that they are so comfortable with one another makes the show feel more comfortable and natural. Their is a UK version of this show, which I do not recommend purely because it is not as funny – the US version is a lot better, and I guarantee you will laugh within the first couple of minutes. This is a great show if you just want a quick laugh, and is a great stress relief.

Baby Daddy

This is another ABC family show. It is a comedy show, but if focused on a love triangle between the protagonists: Riley, Ben and Danny. For those individuals who enjoy love triangles then this show would probably be best suited for you, whilst those of us who find love triangles unbelievably annoying this show should be avoided. It has been going on for 3 seasons now, and the love triangle has still not been resolved – cue frustrations of many. The only thing about this show that is tolerable is the relationship between Tucker (played by Tahj Mowry) and Bonnie Wheeler (played by Melissa Peterman). The comedic points in this show are often provided by these two characters, whereas the other 3 protagonists involved in the love triangle are set to annoy most of the audience. The character of Danny was quite sweet in season 1, but now 2 seasons on is quite annoying and pathetic. The unbelievable plot holes in this show are substantial, as major story lines are curtailed in favor of comedy. Despite it’s major flaws, it does provide a useful comedic release at times, but is not one that is necessary to watch in sequence.

Supernatural

sam-dean-supernatural

Supernatural is a show that I have recently started watching; currently I am on the 3rd season, and I must say that although the episodes follow a similar structure, the basic story line is very interesting. For a CW show, I am impressed with the character development of the 2 brother, Dean and Sam, Particularly Dean. The acting is very good, and has its elements of horror that will make you jump. There are very few, if any, plot holes; and is actually a very decent show to get into. The premise of the show follows two brothers, whose mother faced a horrific death when they were little, prompting their father, and subsequently the siblings, to begin ‘hunting’. So they hunt ghosts and other supernatural beings, however what is so powerful in this show is the relationship between the two. Dean is the eldest, and feels it is his responsibility to protect his younger brother, and unlike other teen shows, this one is not afraid to kill of main characters. The amount of empathy that is created for these two characters is overwhelming, and genuinely displays humanity at it’s best. For a show filled with Vampires, ghosts and demons, it is a show I would recommend watching – especially if you want a show that has a decent story line and characters!
